Wanted to share my cautionary tale, so that none of you make the same mistake as I’ve just made.
So, here’s a question for you
Are you 100% sure your website is backed-up and secure? When I say 100% I really mean the full ONE HUNDRED.
A couple of days ago I was merrily blogging and ALL OF A SUDDEN… the ‘WordPress White Page of Doom’ struck (dum dum duuuum).
BLANK SCREEN. NOTHING!!!!
I couldn’t log on to my WordPress Dashboard for BOTH of my websites. I couldn’t update my website. I couldn’t edit my websites. In fact, I couldn’t even see my website.
Holy Cow! What do I do?
So I rang a web designer friend (hello Ed) and he said “It’s really, really common. But it’s fine, because you’ve backed your website up, haven’t you?…..”
Freddie Starr ate my website
… OK, so no he didn’t (and anyone under the age of 40 won’t know what I’m talking about anyway).
To cut a long story short, a WordPress Plugin (really commonly used one, with lots of downloads, compatible with my theme, and regularly updated) had gone rogue! It had decided it didn’t want to work and it didn’t want anything else to work either.
It felt like someone had given me a swift jab in the kidneys. Had I lost all of my work? Did I have to start again? Did I have to rebuild everything?
Thankfully the web designer managed to nip onto my system, remove the plugin, and save the day before it did some serious damage. It could have been so very much worse.
Is your website backed up?
How would you feel if your website disappeared right this minute? What if it took all the photos, all the copy you’ve spent hours writing, your pricing tables, your contact information? Would you still have access to all of this? Would you have the time or money to put it live again?
Without a backup, it’s not a case of IF it will happen, but a case of WHEN it will happen!!
… did you hear of the 123-reg websites that disappeared overnight? This happened weeks ago and I know of businesses that still aren’t live online. How much impact would that have on your business if you suddenly became invisible?
Well, I’m putting a form of insurance in place. I’m signing up for a website Care Plan* which means my site is backed-up regularly, the plugins are checked, and I’m protected against hackers and viruses. It’s going to cost me a few quid every month, but it’s money well spent if I never have to go through yesterday again!
