We’re joined again by Ninja Nan, Guest Blogger, and veteran cake decorator for her weekly cake rant – “Do you really need all of those Cake Gadgets?”!
“In my Wedding Cake Days, the only equipment available was a rolling pin, a scalpel for cutting rolled icing, 1 piece of corn on the cob husk for texturing (veining), wire, florist tape and your trusted icing bag & nozzle.
Today’s Sugar Crafters are bombarded with cutters, veiners, moulds, levellers, silicone mats, lace mats, all of which cost money. Do we really need all of these cake gadgets, or are we being coaxed into spending unnecessarily?
Challenge yourself to resist the temptation to spend your profit (before you’ve made it). Challenge yourself to find alternative items in your kitchen that you already own. Margins in the cake business are tight, so every penny you can save on ‘not spending’ on gadgets is going to help your business flourish because this is a business – it’s not a hobby!”
